This Thanksgiving Be Thankful for Caregivers

Each November, we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month to recognize and honor caregivers across the United States. The Caregiver Action Network began promoting national recognition of caregivers in 1994 and each year chooses a theme to highlight the many different aspects of caregiving.

This year’s theme is “Caregiving Around the Clock”. This theme was chosen to acknowledge that caregiving can be a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week job. Many caregivers are family caregivers and juggling their own family life and work life in addition to caring for a loved one. Many face challenges in balancing all the different aspect of their lives.

According to Scientific American Mind magazine, 84% of caregivers say they need more help and better information and 42% report that their biggest worries are managing their own stress. One of their top tips is to turn to advocacy and support groups, counselors and therapists to learn specific coping skills such as how to develop a more positive view of a loved one’s behavior and how to think about one’s own journey as a caregiver.

The Caregiver Action Network offers a caregiver toolbox (here) with information on finding a support group, tips on how better to care for our loved ones, checklists, and so much more. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Association is a terrific resource for information and support, check out their caregiver support page (here) and don’t forget to honor a caregiver with your own personal tribute (here)!
